Harm Reduction

It is important to develop realistic expectations about potential outcomes and risks before participating in an experience. It is also important to contemplate alternative therapeutic methods to achieve your goals.

  • A harm reduction session with your therapist can support your understanding of the potential risks and benefits of substance use. If you have never taken substances we recommend you speak with one of our therapists first to see if it is right for you and ensure you can manage risks, reduce harm and make a fully informed autonomous decision. This is usually completed over 2 - 3 sessions.

If there is a possibility you may have an underlying undiagnosed mental health concern you may want to discuss this with your therapist.

  • It is important to educate yourself about substances before you decide to take them. The large amount of information on the internet can make it difficult to distinguish facts from misinformation.

We encourage you to see one of our therapists before you embark on a experience to ensure you receive the facts. This will support you to make an informed decision.

Your therapist can not decide for you. Any decisions made are made by you, autonomously, independent of discussions with your therapist.

  • Education is important. Discover the facts, learn the risks, reduce the harm.

We do not stigmatise persons who are are considering taking a substance. Our therapists are here to ensure that you are well informed, safe, and can reduce the risks and minimise harm.

Integration

We are pleased to be Australia’s first online Mental Health practice to offer integration services both prior to and/or post an experience.

  • Integration is the exploration of insights learned or challenges that arise during the experience, which is used to foster self development.

Integration occurs after a non ordinary state of consciousness experience. Integration is an opportunity to describe your experience in a non judgemental environment with a therapist.

  • Mystical experiences, ego death, symbols, seeing patterns are states of consciousness therapists are educated and informed on.

During integration our therapists will use evidence based therapy within their scope of practice and support you to navigate and make sense of your experience.

If you’ve had a bad experience we can support you.

  • Our clinicians have an extensive understanding of clinical trials, therapy and research. Drawing upon their academic understanding of altered states, they incorporate evidence-based therapies, including third wave cognitive behavioural therapies (eg., DBT, mindfulness, IFS, EMDR, ACT, schema therapy), into individually-tailored treatment plans.

These plans are designed to assist patients to integrate any challenging and/or therapeutic insights that arise during the experience.

  • Enlighten Mental Health offers a harm reduction, evidence-based service for individuals. We believe that all individuals have the right to honest and accurate psycho-education and harm minimisation services.

If you participate in integration services your therapist will employ the harm minimisation and reduction model to ensure our clients are equipped with the best information available, facts and up to date research. We do not exaggerate claims. We ensure our clients are aware of the risks involved psychologically and physically in non-clinical settings.

  • Our therapists are compassionate, understanding and will approach your session with professionalism and care.

Evidence based therapy will be provided.

  • Our team are trained in their field of practice and have experience working with a wide range of clients.

Each of our therapists are psychedelically informed and have undergone training in either psychedelic clinical trials or the Multi-disciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) training.

We use evidence based therapy and apply this to your psychedelic experience. There is no approved training in this space at the moment.

Therapy Topics

Exploring the wide range of topics in psychology and therapy highlights the diversity of mental health care, from different treatments to disorders. It's essential for understanding how to effectively address individual needs and promote well-being. This knowledge empowers you to seek appropriate support and fosters empathy towards various mental health challenges.

  • A panic attack is an episode of intense fear and stress which usually comes over suddenly. Panic attacks can be very scary to experience. Each panic attack may only last a few minutes, however they can leave a person feeling physically and emotionally drained for some time. Panic attacks can also be embarrassing for someone to experience, especially if they occur in a public place. Panic disorder occurs when multiple panic attacks are experienced.

  • Chronic pain can cause elevated levels of psychological stress and discomfort. Psychological treatment provides safe, non-drug methods that can treat your pain directly by reducing high levels of physiological stress that often worsen pain. Psychological treatment also helps improve the indirect effect of pain by helping you learn how to cope with the many problems associated with pain.

  • Victims of childhood abuse often continue to suffer well after the abuse has ceased, carrying feelings of guilt, shame and disgust into adulthood. Childhood abuse is common in society and you are not alone.

It will be a long journey to recovery, but it is possible…members of our team have lived experience and understand how difficult the journey is.

Childhood abuse is often not reported by the victim as the perpetrators can often be trusted adults, the victim may feel fear of retribution of punishment or the victim may fear stigma or feel shame with being a victim of abuse. Victims of childhood abuse often also feel that opening up to others about their experiences will cause them further emotional pain and discomfort. If you’ve survived childhood abuse therapy can assist you on your road to recovery.

  • Life is full of ups and downs and unexpected events. Whilst it is normal to experience short periods when things might seem more difficult, if you find they are happening more frequently and more intensely, you might be suffering from what is called depression. Depression is different to feelings of general sadness and it doesn’t necessarily have a “cause” or be related to a negative event in your life. Depression is treatable.

  • Dissociative disorders involve problems with memory, identity, emotion, perception, behavior and sense of self. Dissociative symptoms can potentially disrupt every area of mental functioning. Examples of dissociative symptoms include the experience of detachment or feeling as if one is outside one’s body, and loss of memory or amnesia. Dissociative disorders are frequently associated with previous experience of trauma. We can assist you to live with your disorder and help you pave the road to recovery.

There are many types of eating disorders that can impact anyone. Eating disorders are common across society in men and women. Eating disorders arise from a number of different factors including situational stressors, social pressures and individual vulnerability through personality factors and hereditary factors. If left untreated, habits can become obsessions and can be very harmful. Eating disorders are not only harmful and distressing to the individual, they also affect the individuals friends and family. Treatment is available.

  • There is no correct way to grieve the loss of a loved one. In the beginning, the weight of loss may seem unbearable, but as time goes on the weight becomes less heavy and easier to carry. Grief is a natural response to loss of a person, place or object which an individual has developed a significant attachment to. Whilst grief is traditionally thought of occurring with the loss of a loved one it can also occur after a wider range of events.

  • Everyone responds differently to a traumatic event and two people can respond differently to the same event. The onset of PTSD can be immediate or delayed, no two people are the same.

If you are experiencing symptoms of PTSD because of a recent or historical event; the good news is PTSD and C-PTSD are treatable and help is available. A range of treatment options are available and the effectiveness of treatment varies between types and between individuals. Speak with one of our therapists today to begin your healing journey.

  • Psychotic disorders are severe mental disorders that cause abnormal thinking and perceptions. People with psychoses lose touch with reality. Two of the main symptoms are delusions and hallucinations. Delusions are false beliefs, such as thinking that someone is plotting against you or that the TV is sending you secret messages. Hallucinations are false perceptions, such as hearing, seeing, or feeling something that is not there.

  • Personality disorders are deeply ingrained, rigid ways of thinking and behaving that result in impaired relationships with others and often cause distress for the individual who experiences them. Mental health professionals formally recognise 10 disorders that fall into three clusters, although there is known to be much overlap between the disorders, each of which exists on a spectrum. Our therapists can support you through this.

  • A substance use disorder involves using too much alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. It can also be called substance abuse, substance dependence or addiction. Around 1 in 20 Australians has an addiction or substance abuse problem. It can result in changes and long-term damage to the brain and other organs. Substance abuse is a major cause of mental illness.
